Yes. We know exactly what you’re thinking. You see the name “Sweetie Aoud” and you begin to imagine a hellish combination of sugary cotton candy with the standard oud accord. Right? Well, throw those misconceptions out the window because Sweetie Aoud is a triumph of refinement over grossness.
First of all, the oud is surprisingly non-assertive in this composition, lying quietly tucked away in the folds of other smoky woods rather than standing proud of the fabric. The opening is a light rustle of citrus and herbs leading to a cool pink rose heart, sweetened with a nutty “patisserie” accord recalling the sugared almond texture of older Guerlains such as L’Heure Bleue. This pastry accord thickens into something approaching the mouthwatering smell of Swedish Pulla bread dipped into cinnamon-flecked milk. Sweetie Aoud is warmly gourmand, yes, but it will never set your teeth on edge. The overall transparency of the composition and the smoky incense in the base pulls this one back from the edge just in time. Don’t let the name put you off this wonderful fragrance.
