Have to echo earlier reviews that this smells very dated, and like Old Spice. Not "kinda' like Old Spice, not "a more refined" Old Spice. Just Old Spice. A regrettable purchase for me

Yes, genius. The orange opening is a brilliant flash but a flash--suddenly gone. The body of the work though is so full of beauty that you want to be immersed in it completely. The drydown stays very close to the body of the work--it's soft, sophisticated, powdery but not grandmotherly, sexy, and highly wearable. The perfume game has moved on though so it does seem a little dated, so I think of it as a classic and I'm fine with that.

This is the NYC of car services, not the subway: Immensely wearable citrus-and-wood that is, like so many spaces in the city, far larger on the inside than you'd expect. The dryness comes off as polished and brisk. I can imagine keeping a bit of this on hand for those days when you don't feel like a grownup but very much need your colleagues to mistake you for one -- or, as above, days when you're Batman but need the world to see Bruce Wayne.

I was able to breathe a big sigh of relief when I received my bottle of 'post EU/IFRA' New York in 2015. Perhaps not as robust / deep as what I had come to know and love, but Ms. Nicolai has triumphed in the face of all odds in delivering the goods. Still one of the most alluring and satisfying classic masculine chyprientals on the planet IMHO (the other being the wonderful Tiffany for Men). Bravo.

I have bought several bottles of this and it is one of my most frequent choices for work. True, it's a mans scent but I like it for women who take their careers just as seriously. It's warm, approachable, sensual without screaming sex. I recommend it for any working scent wardrobe. It's reasonably priced and let's you save the exotic scents for special occasions. It's respectable, without being pretentious.

I would agree there is plenty of spicy and oriental action here. It's good, but in no way youthful or even contemporary. To my nose it smells a little "dated", like that bottle of Eternity that has been in my mom's guest bathroom since the 80's when it was purchased (next to the bottle of Obsession). Classic and somewhat sophisticated, but not making it into my collection.

My initial impression of this is that it smells like British Sterling (exactly!)

This is one of the fragrances in my husband's current rotation, and probably the one I like best on him of all the things he has worn over the years. Whenever he is wearing it, I just want to keep smelling it. It really is hard to pin down--although it does contain citrus, spices, amber, and so forth, no one note really stands out. All the notes just blend together so well into a wonderful, smooth, classy whole. To my mind, this is what a classy men's fragrance should be. It is so much better than all those characterless "sport" scents on the market, and yet it is not at all weird or edgy like so many niche scents. At the risk of sounding as if I am damning with faint praise (and I certainly don't mean it that way), it just smells really, really good.

Incredibly suave, smooth, nuanced, refined and leaning towards the masculine. Handsome like no modern masculine is handsome. Nicolai fragrances are blended with supreme elegance for supreme uniqueness; they make department store fragrances seem like AXE by comparison. I know New York is the suggested locale here, but this fragrance smells somehow Asian to me... like tatami flooring and bamboo buildings, or reedy, like a fine Panama hat. A man could wear it informally, but in a tux or costly suit is where NEW YORK belongs. Has a "James Bond" kind of ultra-suaveness... sure to be swoonworthy to women who buy it for their men.

Luca Turin, the Emperor of Scent, gives de Nicolai's New York his highest praise when he writes, "I wore it for a decade." This is one intoxicating woody oriental.

I ordered a number of samples from this site, and this is the first one I tried. It wasn't love at first sniff, as New York seemed a bit too traditional for my modern aesthetic, but as the day wore on the scent grew on me until six hours later I found myself sitting in a chair with my nose buried in my wrists, waving away anyone who looked like they might want to start a conversation. This is really good stuff, expertly balanced. It's vanilla and dry wood, a touch of citrus flowers and incense smoke, clean leather and burnt sugar. It smells like good whiskey with a splash of Drambuie. It feints and thrusts and parries throughout the day without ever going overboard. I don't agree (at all) with the reviewer who said it smells like Old Spice. This is a more sophisticated fragrance of corner offices, conference calls, power lunches and leather upholstered bars whose glowing shelves are lined with bottles of single malt scotch. A classic.

So smoothe. The transition from the warm bergamot opening through the peppery spices and into the vetiver/amber basenotes is the smoothest transition of any fragrance I've smelled. Warm and nearly perfect.

Actually, I've worn this for a few years now, and people often ask me about it. Sometimes they're surprised to hear that it's a man's fragrance, sometimes not. But as a woman, I'd find it heavy in summer and only wear it in the cooler seasons ...

Nice, elegant. Dated IMHO, but not without consideratble charm.

A wonderful citrus/spice/amber fragrance with depth and longevity. It's heady and the amber makes it slightly powdery. This is an elegant, sexy, masculine frag., that IMO can be worn in any season, for any occasion. Old Spice this definitely is NOT!!!

Reminds me of Old Spice.
